PATCHMAN MUSIC Presents...

Nyle Steiner Performs with Melissa Manchester

In January 1998, we attended the radio play titled, "I Sent A Letter To My Love" at the DoubleTree Hotel in Santa Monica, California. This LA Theatre Works production starred singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester who also composed the music as well. The show, a musical about romance and longing in small town America, was recorded live for broadcast and was aired on KCRW radio on April 19th, 1998.

The "pit orchestra" was comprised of just a pianist and Nyle Steiner on EVI. Nyle played all of the wind and string solo parts on EVI. As expected, his performance was flawless and the acoustic instrument emulation performances were dead on.

After the show we had the opportunity to speak with Nyle and snap a few photos. We hope you find these rare photos interesting.

A rare close up photo of Nyle Steiner's own rig. Notice the custom interface circuitry in the lid (!) of the Anvil case. This appears to be where the EVI ribbon cable connects and may also be an analog synth. Below, in the main area of the case we find an additional custom rack unit which appears to control various aspects including chord output. Below this we find the MIDI modules including a Korg 05R/W (left) next to a Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas (right). Below them we see a Boss SE-50 Stereo Effects Processor (left) next to a Lexicon LXP-1 (right). Below this is a Roland JV-1080 sound module.

The truly impressive thing to note is that these sound modules are not generally regarded as exceptionally responsive wind controller slaves in the class of a Yamaha VL physical modelling synth for instance. Nevertheless, Nyle is able to coax world-class, totally believable acoustic emulations out of them. I can assure you that the sounds I heard Nyle playing were absolutely realistic even to these discerning ears!
