Keyboardists can also enjoy these highly expressive sounds when used with a Yamaha BC1, BC2, or BC3 plugged directly into a keyboard equipped with a breath controller input (i.e. Yamaha VL70-m) or plugged into a device such as the MIDI Solutions Breath Controller Box or Anatek Wind Machine (out of production). These sounds require a wind controller or breath controller for proper use. These soundbanks are NOT compatible with the Fantom G series, Fantom S series, or any other synth. These sounds load inside the Roland SonicCell sound module- NOT inside a wind controller. These new sounds for the Roland SonicCell are the result of over 4 years of programming by professional wind controller player / sound designer Matt Traum. They have been programmed specifically for the Roland SonicCell to take advantage of the new SonicCell samples and features- they were not simply converted from our previous XV or JV sounds. Plucked, Vox, & Synth - Roland SonicCell Volume 2 contains 128 Patches and 32 Performances programmed by wind controller expert Matt Traum- an experienced wind synthesist and sound designer. Matt has used these sounds in performance for over 4 years. The Patchman Music Volume 2 Soundbank for the Roland SonicCell takes over where Volume 1 left off. This bank begins with a great collection of plucked and percussive type sounds including a wide variety of guitars, basses, keyboards, and percussion instruments all tweaked to be played with a wind controller. This bank continues on with some outstanding organ lead sounds and vocal type sounds including Take 6 style chords and scat type lead voices. Getting into the heart of this bank you will find a plethora of synth timbres that respond extremely well to your breath expression. All of the classic synth leads are here including those fat Judd-style EWI leads, breathy and bell-type sounds, huge Brecker-inspired analog layers and chords, and so much more. We have also included some ambient patches allowing you to create extremely complex washes of sound. There are looping type sounds that echo what you play allowing you to build up intricate rhythms. There are some clever patches whereby your breath level morphs the sound from a single note into a chord. ...And the Performance bank is truly amazing! All the fat lead sounds are there. And for the first time ever, we have developed a technique that emulates the rotating chord washes that Michael Brecker made so famous. Reiterate a note and you will hear the chord change each time it is played! Up until now, this technique was only available on the very expensive Oberheim Xpander. Now YOU can sound like Michael Brecker with those massive layered chordal washes! These sounds are incredibly fun to play and very inspiring- and very cool! You will definitely turn a few heads with these sounds. All sounds have been logically organized by type for quick and easy access. This is an amazing soundbank that transforms the Roland SonicCell into an expressive powerhouse.
Yes, this Volume 2 soundbank AND the Volume 1soundbank can BOTH be be loaded into the Roland SonicCell at the same time! Buy both banks and you will have 256 Patches and 64 Performances ready to play! These sounds load inside the Roland SonicCell module- NOT inside a wind controller.

Bruce Hornsby WX5 Player Bobby Read Comments...
"Hey Matt, I've been so busy preparing for the tour and working on integrating the Sonic Cell sounds into my workflow that I haven't had a chance to sit down and tell you my experience with your Sonic Cell patches. So here goes, for anyone who plays a windcontroller go buy a Sonic Cell and then buy Matt's patches! One of the first things I'll say is that these patches, along with the incredible fast response of the unit, are going to make me a better player. There is so much subtlety built into so many of these patches that it forces, or allows you to learn how to use tongue velocity and breath response in a much more detailed way. The patches respond so well. This promises to fulfill my dream of a simple powerful, multitimbral, portable windsynth brain. Because in my personal setup- I need access to a variety of sounds to do my gig with Hornsby- until now I've had to rely heavily on the laptop. On the Sonic Cell I can easily set up a great variety of multitimbral performances that are one by one matching or replacing my former patches - patches that were made up of a combination of laptop sounds.
But there are tons of sounds on here that are better that anything I've heard or played - right now I've been practicing like crazy on the fiddle sound, with a single lower harmony. Amazing sounding double stops (that would be impossible probably), I'm actually playing convincing sounding fiddle tunes!
Where else to start? The harmonicas, sitar, banjo (a bitch to play), big strings, powerful synth leads, great cup mute brass, killer harmon trumpet, amazing clarinet section, multi-woodwinds, the ultra cool Breckord patches- I've made a performance with one of those with harmon, clarinet, and your oberheim patch. Killer. Basses, keyboards, vibes, bunches of great synth patches.
So many sounds, and I'm going to be using it probably on every song I play the windsynth on during the coming Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers shows throughout the year. I may need 2 of them to do all I'd like to do!
So Matt, I can't thank you enough for your contribution, not only with this new revolutionary tool you've created, but all along my road with the WX5. From the VL70 turbo patches, to your Reaktor instrument, as well as all the help and advice along the way, I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing without all your efforts. As I think about it, you really are single handedly responsible for many of the advances in this wind controller world. Bravo!! Thanks again and best wishes."

Pioneering EVI player & member of Blood Sweat & Tears, Bruce Cassidy comments on this soundbank...
"Hey Matt, I installed the sounds and tried them tonight. Played for hours. These are everything that you say! Brilliant programming! Really usable and amazingly responsive sounds. I like that so much care has been taken with the Fantom's FXs. The reverbs and various effects are very appropriate to the sounds. Bravo! These sounds are really playable. I really like the implementation of the variable volume and I like how you've applied it. I'm knocked out Matt - you've done an amazing job. Very kind regards and admiration for tremendous work! Sincerely, Bruce."

Synthophone Inventor Martin Hurni Comments...
"Hi Matt. Your sounds for the Fantom XR are just great!! Also the polyphonic capabilities are really stunning! I will definitely promote your sounds at the upcoming Frankfurt Musikmesse. Thank you again, and have a nice weekend to come!"
Martin Hurni - Inventor of the Softwind Instruments Synthophone
"Oh man, you've really done it this time! I was digging the flutes so much, then I got to Patch 5 and the clarinet just blew my socks off, and I had to start this email to tell ya!!! 'OVERTONE!' nice! I better start recording with this one. I think it's my new sound. Nice trumpets, trombones, combo patches. One thing I'm noticing is every patch is very sensitive- playing will full dynamic range has a nice feel. WELL DONE MATT ! BRAVO and all that jazz. Your patches inspire me :) :) :) :) :) :) Just for the record, after playing your new patches, the Fantom is now my #1 favorite synth! Have a great day !!!" - Erik Klein, Synthophone Master
"OMG!! The Xpander-esque rotating Brecker chords in Volume 2 are freakin' amazing!!! I've wanted to do those types of sounds ever since hearing Michael Brecker do them in the 80s. Thank you SO MUCH for making this magical sound happen!. I can't believe you figured out a way to do this on the Roland!"
"I've been working with Matt Traum's new patches for the Roland Fantom XR synth for the past two weeks and must say they are all very good if not amazing! Matt said he focused on patches that emulate 'real' instruments in his comments about this new set of patches and I have to say he was totally successful! All the woodwind (flutes, oboes, english horn, bassoon, clarinets, and saxes) patches are outstanding. Felt like I had become Eddie Daniels in a 3+ hour practice session yesterday (lost track of time the patches were so great!). This was a great investment for me... as I use my EWI/WX5 controllers for my solo work, where I've found my audience is much more engaged with me playing multiple 'instruments' on my gigs.. (flugelhorn, trumpet, clarinet, bone, etc..) along with my alto & tenor saxes. Matt's work on this new set added some greatly improved patches, when compared to my Roland XV-5050 patches. Bottom-line... I highly recommend Matt's patches!!"
"The Performances are amazing. If you want strings, there are a couple of string section Performance patches that my first impression is telling me are better than any single voice string patch I've played."
"Matt, I played with the new patches as soon as I loaded them and I must tell you that they are 'fresh' and vibrant and they give a new direction to go for wind synth players. They make the SonicCell an even better investment for those thinking of buying one and for those that have one already. I spend most of my time in Mexico and wind controllers are not accessable or used much at all and people are amazed by the sounds that come from your patches and especialy these new ones for SonicCell. Thanks again for your work and please keep it up and I'm looking forward to even more for the SonicCell in the future. Another plus is your very good instructions for loading. Not all of us are puter geeks but you make it easy and enjoyable."
"I've been using Matt's patches on a variety of my synths for quite some time. Most recently I've picked up his SonicCell and Fantom XR volumes (1&2). They are wonderfully expressive and I am getting a bunch of positive feedback on the quality of the sounds. Thanks Matt!"
"The multi-voice 'Performances' in the SonicCell are just too much fun to be believed. Just wandering through the options I found 'section' sound after 'section' sound that had me thumbing through the Real Books for the Work Song chart. Just what the doctor ordered to be a one man horn section in a rock group. But then came the string performances and I was turning the pages looking for a ballad, any ballad. Wow!"
"Now that I'm getting into the swing of using it, the XR is wonderful to play on. Thank you so much for this patch-work! Hopefully I'll be able to use this in my college's Jazz band this year. Cheers."
"Hello Matt, I am really astonished. These sounds are fantastic!!!! Thank you very much, I am very satisfied! A happy customer."
"Your Sonic Cell Patches layered with your EWI patches are a force to be reckoned with."
"Hi Matt, thanks to your astonishing Performances and Patches on the Sonic Cell, I have have been transported into an amazing new world of pure sound. My next ambition is to learn how to handle that box which can do so much more. I little dreamed what Performances meant. That you can write a full 16 part Performance provided you don't exceed 128 partials playable on the EWI. Anyway I shall be dead before I understand it all but salute you and your skill."
"Hi Matt. Very many thanks for the instrument banks for the EWI and more recently for the Sonic Cell (SC). They are brilliant, and I've just used the latter in the pit for a production of 'A Christmas Carol', where my Reeds score was for Oboe (C), Clarinet and Sax (Bb) and English Horn (F) instruments! Brilliant!!!! The SC range of instruments is particularly impressive. Many thanks for a great product."
"Matt, I purchased a Fantom XR and a SonicCell from Patchman Music recently. Wonderful beyond words!! OBVIOUSLY, I need SoundBank II now that it is available. Thanks much!!"
"Just wanted to say I picked up a Roland SonicCell and installed the Patchman voices today. I find this a very interesting and high value set of instruments. The instrument sounds are more nuanced than the XV-2020 set, which I've always liked very much. I'm very happy with the value in the SonicCell instruments and will have a great time playing and layering them. Kudos to Matt! Long may he patch!"
"Matt, Wanted to take the time to thank your for the wonderful patches in the Sonic Cell. I had no problem setting it up and your patches are really wonderfully expressive. Having the time of my life with this. Thanks."
"Matt, Just wanted to let you know that everything went smoothly and I am enjoying playing both my WX5 and my keyboard controller with my SonicCell. Now I don't need to lug my gig rack to rehearsals. Regards."
"Hey Matt, I got the SonicCell yesterday. It's amazing and I can't stop playing it. I was very happy to find that I can scroll through all patches from the EWI itself, which for me makes such a huge difference in being able to quickly and simply change sounds, not having to deal with the box. I love the fact that I don't have to hook it up to my computer, and so it'll be very convenient to bring to gigs. Thanks again!"
"Hi Matt, I have started practicing my EWI. Getting a little better each day. Playing the Roland Sonic Cell patches sounds are great. Thanks for creating such realistic sounds. I hope to be playing live in the next 30-60 days. Thanks."
"Good Morning Matt, I have been using my new Roland for a couple of weeks now and I've got to tell you, the Sax and Brass Section Patches are amazing!"
"I do have Matt's sounds on the XV-5050. The SonicCell patches are really a step up. I confess I hadn't tried the Performances but I have now and I like many of them very much. There's a lot of fun surprises there. I'm a classical flutist and I've wondered sometimes if I'm especially picky about flute sounds because I know them so well. I've always admired the sax and horn sounds Matt has produced. The SonicCell set has some pretty nice non-standard flutes -- native flutes with lots of breath and effects that I will make use of. The harmonicas and accordians seem much better to me than any from my other units. Some of the layered strings are very good. Other synths' layered strings pale in comparison. There are some really fun Performances. So, even more than the last time I posted, I'm thrilled with these sounds. I would have thought the purchase to be valuable if there were 3 patches that pleased me. In fact the number is way up there (and would be even higher if I was a sax and horn guy -- I think there are some very fine sounds on the SonicCell in both those categories). SonicCell + Patchman is a very good paintbox."
"Well... first performance with the new Roland Fantom XR and Matt's patches.... done. Man, what a great experience!!!! I ended up using only 4 patches for the 2-hour gig... about 75% using the 'Clarinet1' patch... 15% the 'Harmonica1' patch... and the other 10% using the '<<PAT>>' and 'Mangione' patches on my VL70-m w/Turbo chip. Bluesette played with your Harmonica patch is an absolute KILLER patch. And the Clarinet (aka Eddie Daniels) patch is THE MOST RESPONSIVE patch I've ever played! When I play with that patch... I can't help but play well! Man... this is some great work you did!!! Thanks...sure is adding to my performance quality!"
