PATCHMAN MUSIC, LLC maintains one of the largest inventories of wind controller parts in the world. Because of this, we can fix wind synths that others simply cannot. Please understand that occasionally parts are no longer available for older wind controllers. In such cases, we may even offer to buy unrepairable wind controllers for parts.

EWI1000 and EVI1000 Solid State Breath Sensor Mod and Bite Sensor Mod !! The stock EWI1000 / EVI1000 breath and bite sensors have become quite a problem as these controllers age. The old factory breath sensors stiffen over time to the point of being very unresponsive or even completely non-functional. Also the EWI-1000/EVI-1000 bite sensors are notorious for physically breaking and going completely dead. Matt Traum at Patchman Music, wind controller guru and EWI tech to Bob Mintzer, Judd Miller, and Steve Tavaglione, has developed a brand new SOLID STATE breath sensor modification for the Akai EWI1000 and EVI1000 which is infinitely more responsive, sensitive, reliable, and robust than the old stock sensors. This is a MAJOR hardware upgrade for these original Akai controllers that provides a remarkable improvement in both reliability and sensitivity. You will love this new breath sensor and it will make your EWI1000/EVI1000 play better than new! If you are playing an EVI1000 or EWI1000 with the original breath sensor from 1987, you don't know what you are missing! EWV2000 Upgraded LCD Mod. The stock Akai EWV2000 can be quite a problem as these modules age. After many years, the factory green LCD gets so dim and such low contrast that is becomes practically unreadable. So Patchman Music has developed a brand new LCD Replacement mod for the Akai EWV2000 which is far brighter and has far better contrast. You will LOVE this new LCD mod that we have developed. Aside from it just looking really cool, it is also really easy to see- even under brightly lit stage lighting. The photo at right doesn't do this beautiful LCD justice- it's hard to capture the gorgeous glow with a camera. EWI1000 / EVI1000 EWV2000 Connecting Cable Mod. The stock connecting cable that goes between the EWI1000 / EVI1000 and the EWV2000 sound module is a proprietary cable that is long out of production. As your Akai cable starts to fail or go bad, you will notice intermittent glitches in the sensors and/or a complete shut down of the controller. Up until now you would be out of luck - but not anymore! Patchman Music has developed a fantastic new hardware mod which replaces the super-rare and discontinued proprietary cable with a much more commonly available type along with corresponding new connectors on the EWI1000/EVI1000 and the EWV2000. If the new cable were to ever go bad, replacement would be much easier since we use a much more common type of cable that is readily available. Backup Battery Replacement. Are your EWV2000, EWI3020m, EWI3030m, EWI3000m user patches scrambled? Has your EWI module all of the sudden become non-operational? We can fix that. We offer a backup battery replacement service. Most times this is a rather complicated procedure that requires disassembly and soldering so it should only be done by a service tech here at Patchman Music. For example, in the Akai EWI modules replacing the backup battery requires nearly a complete disassembly of the unit as well as very careful soldering. We install a battery clip with a snap in battery for much easier future battery replacement by the user.

Wind Controller Calibration. Often times, folks new to the wind controller will start adjusting their instrument incorrectly and put it into unplayable condition. We can get you back on track quickly.

OS Updates. Got an older unit that is running an outdated OS version? We can update most wind controller synth modules to the latest OS.

MIDI EVI Wireless MIDI Mod. We can modify your MIDI EVI to be a fully self-contained wireless MIDI wind controller. You too can own one of the world's first truly self-contained wireless MIDI wind controllers. A transmitter is installed in the area where the 9 volt battery normally is. The battery is moved outside the body and it is now in the canister area. The antenna is inside the body so there is virtually no sign of the added wireless capabilities from the outside! Everything is powered from a single 9 volt battery, one single power switch, and no extra wires. It is incredible to have this freedom. Here is a picture of Matt Traum's modified Wireless MIDI EVI. The MIDI wireless receiver (not shown) is about the size of a deck of cards. (Note that this photo shows an additional custom mod with a clear wraparound panel. EWI4000s F# Trill Key Mod. Miss having an F# Trill Key on your EWI4000s? PATCHMAN MUSIC, LLC has developed a mod that adds this key (see photo at right). Email Matt at Patchman Music for details.

EWI4000s Noisy Headphone Jack Mod. Got a noisy squealing headphone jack on your EWI4000s? We can completely silence that with our proprietary circuit mod developed in our wind controller pro shop.

EWI4000s Bend Sensor Mod. The stock EWI4000s from the beginning has had a design flaw that makes it difficult- if not impossible- to attain a full value of pitch bend from its right hand thumb bend sensors. So it was impossible to make a full two half step bend up predictably and in tune. Also the bend up sensor feels like it needs a lot more thumb pressure compared to the bend down sensor. We have developed a custom circuit mod at the request of EWI legend Steve Tavaglione that evens out the apparent pressure requirements of the right hand thumb bend sensors so they feel like they are responding equally. Our mod also makes it very easy to attain a full range of pitchbend MIDI controller values so that you can now bend to the full range easily and predictably. EWI5000 Battery Charging Mod. Patchman Music is now offering an internal hardware circuit mod that allows older versions of the Akai EWI5000 to charge its internal battery that has depleted all the way. Without the mod, the battery becomes completely non-functional leaving the user with no option but to replace it. This mod is a big benefit if you have this trouble. Email Matt if you are having this trouble and are interested in the mod.

EWI USB Repairs and Mods. Yes, we repair and mod the Akai EWI USB. Is the Bite Sensor on your EWI not working right? We can fix that! We can also make the EWI USB lighter and we can make all FOUR rollers turn. This allows slightly easier access to the outer octave ranges and makes the horn more comfortable to hold. EWI / EVI Roller Service. Getting lots of glitches when using the EWI / EVI rollers? We can make your rollers better than new with our proprietary techniques we have developed in our wind controller lab. This is especially needed with the original EWI1000 and EVI1000 models.

EWI / EVI Mouthpiece Replacement and Adjustment. Is the bite sensor in your EWI / EVI not feeling right or does the mouthpiece need to be replaced? We can fix it professionally.

EWI / EVI / WX DH Breath Sensor Replacement. Is your EWI / EVI / WX / DH breath sensor not responding like it used to? We can install a new one in most models.

WX5, WX7, WX11, EWI Breath and Bite Sensor Calibration. We sell a lot of WXs and EWIs and we have NEVER received a factory fresh WX / EWI that was properly calibrated from the factory. This is why we hand calibrate EACH AND EVERY NEW WX and EWI we sell before it leaves our shop. If you are having trouble doing reliable pitchbending, vibrato, and tonguing with your Yamaha WX or Akai EWI, give us a call. Our calibration procedure includes an electronic as well as a physical calibration that makes all the difference in the world. WX5, WX7, WX11 Bite Sensor Repair. Is your WX Bite Sensor no longer responding? We can fix that.

WX5 LED Color Mod. How about some cool blue wind and bite LEDs. We can do that!

WX11 Key Switch Replacements. Are some of the notes or octave keys on your WX11 sticking or not responding reliably (or at all) to your fingers? We can make your WX11 play like new.

WX5, WX7, WX11 Octave Key Switch Replacement. If your WX Octave keys are feeling sluggish or non-responsive, or the switch has broken or the button is worn, that is no problem for Patchman Music's Wind Controller repair shop.

VL70-m Radio Interference Fix. Hearing some cool licks from your VL70-m but they're not coming from you? We can fix radio signal interference on the your VL70-m once and for all.

VL70-m Internal Battery Replacement. After decades of service, the original factory internal backup batteries in the Yamaha VL70-m units are all starting to fail. If you are getting the dreaded "Battery Low!" message when you boot your VL70-m, or it has already lost all its settings, have no fear, the battery can be replaced. But a proper sized replacement battery is almost impossible to find. The more common replacements do not fit back in easily and if you don't know exactly what you are doing, you can cause MAJOR expensive damage. So Patchman Music is now offering the backup battery service. When we do the job, you will NOT lose any of your personal edits- we retain the data in the unit for you, and we will check out the rest of the unit and let you know if other work is needed. Jack and Connector Replacement. We can fix broken output jacks and other connectors on your gear.

Noisy Knobs. We can fix that.

EWI3020m Stepping Noise Circuit Mod. The stock EWI3020m makes a strange zippering type sound when played. It is especially bad when controlling the EWI3020m module via its MIDI In port. We have developed a circuit mod for this that eliminates this odd sounding stepping noise distortion on the Akai EWI3020m. EWI3000m Module CV Outs Mod. We can add CV outs to your Akai EWI3000m module. Adds Control Voltage output jacks for Bend CV, Glide CV, Breath CV, Vibrato CV, Pitch Octave CV, Pitch Finger CV, and Pitch Combined CV.

Steiner / Crumar EVI Overhaul. Has your Crumar seen better days? Our repair tech, Matt Traum, is a leading authority and performer on the Crumar EVI. We specialize in the Steiner / Crumar EVI! Matt can get this wonderful instrument back into top playing condition. If needed, we can replace the power cord, calibrate the synth, clean the pots, check the switches and octave canister, replace chips and components, update the power supply, etc... Steiner / Crumar EVI Bend Sensor Mod. Finally- bend sensors for the Crumar! This is the single most desirable thing that was not built into the Crumar. We can add bend sensors to your Crumar EVI transforming it into a truly professional fully expressive wind controller. Click here for a photo of this mod. Steiner / Crumar EVI Transpose Switch Mod. We can add a dedicated 3 position transpose switch right on your Crumar EVI horn for instant transposition to Bb, C, or Eb. Great for reading parts and scores for differently pitched instruments. Actually you can specify which 3 intervals you would like! Perhaps you would like C, C#, and 1 octave up? Steiner / Crumar EVI Octave Transpose Switch Mod. We can add a dedicated three position transpose switch to your Crumar EVI synth for instant overall octave transposition. Click here for a photo of this mod. The transpose switch is covering the letter "i" in the Steiner logo.

Steiner / Crumar EVI CV Outs Mod. We can add three dedicated 1/4" output jacks to your Crumar EVI synth for control voltage (CV) signals for pitch, vibrato (pitchbend) sensor, and breath sensor.

Steiner / Crumar EVI Connecting Cable Mod. Having trouble with shorts or intermittent connections with the EVI connecting cable? We can replace the short and bulky hard wired connecting cable with a new REMOVABLE and DISCONNECTABLE cable and new connector jacks. Now you can connect a cable of any length to your EVI for full freedom of movement. Also you can swap Crumar EVI controllers very easily if needed. Click here and here for photos of this mod.

Steiner / Crumar Breath Sensor/Power LED Mod. We can modify the Crumar's power LED to change colors when you blow! The color gradually crossfades from red to green as you blow harder into the EVI. Pretty cool!

Steiner / Crumar Power LED Mod. We can replace that boring red power on indicator LED with an exciting cool new blue one of the 21st century. Other colors are available as well. Click here for a photo of this mod. (This photo also shows the "Breath Sensor LED Mod").

Steiner / Crumar Breath Sensor LED Mod. We can install a second LED to indicate breath level. This LED gets brighter as you blow harder into the EVI. Other colors are available as well. Click here for a photo of this mod. (This photo also shows the blue "Power LED Mod").

Steiner / Crumar Power Supply Rebuild. We can rebuild the power supply in your Crumar EVI with new and more modern components. Since the Crumar is going on 25 years old, it's not a bad idea to do this before serious damage occurs to its hard to find chips and other components.

Steiner / Crumar EVI AC Power Cord Replacement. If your power cord is looking old, we can replace it.

Steiner / Crumar Breath to Pulse Width Mod. We can modify the Steiner Crumar EVI to give you control over pulse width and breath to pulse width. This two knob mod opens up a huge range of sonic possibilities. The sound goes amazing to crazy-fat-huge-amazing!

Steiner / Crumar TM to Filter Reduction Mod. The factory settings for when the TM switch is engaged is not terribly musical due to the fact that there is far too much filter modulation. This mod gives the Steiner Crumar EVI a much more musical sounding vibrato when the TM switch is engaged.

Steiner / Crumar DETUNE KNOB Mod. Patchman Music has developed a really cool mod that adds a DETUNE KNOB to the front panel of the Crumar EVI. This DETUNE knob kicks in when the DBL switch is turned on. The knob allows you to dial in everything from a subtle phasing sound to an all out over the top super-detuned PHATNESS! This mod makes a dramatic difference in the amount timbral range that can be achieved with the Crumar EVI. Email Matt if need would like to know more about this awesome development.

Steiner EVI, Steiner-Parker EVI Repairs. Patchman Music is one of the only places in the world that knows these complicated and unique instruments and can get them working properly.

TOA D3 Mixer Repairs. This is by far our favorite wind controller mixer. We recommend it for our wind controller clients and we support it! We can fix your TOA D-3 mixer. We have original replacement parts in stock for these rare but excellent single rack space mixers. We also often sell refurbished used ones here.

The Cost / Fee / Rates...

The cost of repairs and mods varies with the job to be done. The minimum charge for the repair shop is $100 plus shipping back to you. This non-refundable $100 minimum charge includes the initial evaluation / first hour of shop time. Additional shop labor time is $100 per hour. The customer is also responsible for the cost of parts as well as return shipping/handling which generally ranges from $50 to $95. We recommend FedEx or UPS for shipping. Ohio residents will be charged appropriate Ohio sales tax.

The average repair takes a few hours. Turnaround time is usually pretty quick- usually a matter of only a few days- unless we need to special order parts. If we need to order parts the delay can be significantly longer. Since Patchman Music is a FULL TIME wind controller repair shop, we stock a very large selection of wind controller parts- the largest in the world. This allows us to repair your wind controller quicker and better than ANYONE.

There is always a chance that your item cannot be repaired or that it simply is not practical to proceed to repair it due to cost or availability of parts. In such cases, we will let you know and you can decide the next step. We buy unrepairable wind controllers for our parts inventory. Also, utilizing previously used but fully functioning parts may also be an option. If anyone can fix your ailing wind controller it is Patchman Music!

Payment is required in full before we can ship the item back. Payment may be made via PayPal, personal check, cashier's check, or money order. If paying by paper payment (check, money order, etc...), we must hold items for 5 days to allow the payment to clear. Please make checks and money orders payable to "PATCHMAN MUSIC, LLC". There is $40 fee for checks returned for non-sufficient funds.

Repairs are for USA - based customers ONLY. No Exceptions. Do NOT ship us gear from outside the USA.

Outside the USA?

Our wind controller repair service is for USA customers only. We do not ship HARDWARE overseas and we do not receive HARDWARE from overseas. (As always, our SOFTWARE products CAN be shipped overseas). If you wish to have an item repaired here and you live outside of the USA, you will need to find someone within the USA that can completely handle the transaction for you. This means that your USA contact would need ship the item to us (from within the USA), pay for the item, and receive the repaired item back from us. If this is not possible then you will need to find a repair person in your country. There are no exceptions to this policy. Do NOT ship us gear from outside the USA.

Since we are full time WIND CONTROLLER PROFESSIONALS we fix gear properly and very quickly. Most repairs are completed within a day or two of when the gear was received! So payment via a credit card will allow us to send the item back to you faster than payment via a personal check or money order.

Unlike the hobbyists or part-timers that dabble in this area, PATCHMAN MUSIC is a dedicated full-time professional wind controller business. Patchman Music specializes in wind controllers and can do most repairs on most wind controllers. We have worked on numerous wind controllers and have a huge stock of wind controller parts- many being no longer available anywhere else.

How To Proceed

VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT SEND GEAR HERE WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION FROM PATCHMAN MUSIC!...

If you would like PATCHMAN MUSIC to repair your gear, first email Matt to discuss the problem. After the repair has been discussed you have been given authorization to send the item to us, proceed by packing the item very well in bubble wrap so the unit gets to us in one piece. Also include a note _specifically_ describing the problems, how we can reproduce the problem, and what you want us to do. Please include your complete name and address and phone number inside the box. Be sure to ship the item insured. We recommend FedEx or UPS for shipping. Also be sure a signature is required so that you know the item arrived here safely. DO NOT send gear without prior approval and authorization from Patchman Music. Do NOT send payment unless we ask you to- we will contact you via email or phone after the repair has been done for payment.

Shipping

We recommend that you pad the item very well when you pack it and send ONLY the necessary items. Do not send batteries or AC adaptors or cables unless we ask you to do so. Ship to the address below via an insured and trackable method with signature required. This is for your own protection and will eliminate the possibility of any unpleasant surprises for either party. "Just got my MIDI EVI back from Matt, and I am a very happy guy. Like many of the MIDI EVI's out there, mine is about 12 or 13 years old. This is the first time in for any service, so of course this speaks well for the build quality of Nyle Steiner. Matt rebuilt the breath sensor, replaced some worn wiring, and added several mods, including the stainless steel valve pads, the canister ring, the additional controller/embouchure sensor, and the octave roller upgrade. The octave roller upgrade is just wonderful, much smoother than the original, and perfectly quiet. I highly recommend it! I have not tried the embouchure sensor yet. We also added a wire that goes from the additional controller to the barrier nut, so that touching the nut will send mod wheel. I also got the Midi Jet Pro system. So much fun. I tested it by playing several floors away with no dropouts. Can't wait to try it on the gig. Freedom! Mine is installed inside the controller. So cool. So a big public thanks to Matt!"
